Kennedy Agyapong offers to stand as surety for Prof Ameyaw-Akumfi

Former Assin Central MP, Kennedy Agyapong, has volunteered as a surety for Professor Christopher Ameyaw-Akumfi. Prof. Ameyaw-Akumfi is the former Board Chairman of the Ghana Infrastructure Investment Fund (GIIF). He was recently granted bail.

This offer came during court proceedings on Monday, May 26. The court set the bail amount at GH¢10 million. They required two sureties to justify this amount with property in Greater Accra.

Mr. Agyapong was present in court and offered his support. The defence team is working to meet the bail requirements.

Earlier, Prof. Ameyaw-Akumfi's lawyer, Duke Aaron Sasu, requested bail based on his client's recognisance. He mentioned Prof. Ameyaw-Akumfi’s long public service history.

The professor has held several important roles. These include Minister for Education and Minister for Ports and Harbours. He also served as a lecturer and Pro Vice-Chancellor at the University of Cape Coast.

The defence highlighted the professor’s age of 80 years and his medical history. He recently underwent two surgical procedures, which they argued warranted leniency in bail terms.

Deputy Attorney General Dr. Justice Srem-Sai did not oppose the bail application. However, he urged the court to maintain similar terms as another accused person—GH¢15 million with two sureties backed by property in Greater Accra.

Justice Comfort Tasiame ultimately ruled for a reduced bail amount of GH¢10 million. Both sureties must justify this amount with property located in Greater Accra.
