Kennedy Agyapong, a 2024 presidential candidate, has withdrawn from the NPP's "Thank You" tour. He cited security threats to his supporters as the reason.
This decision follows a violent incident in Kumasi. A student from Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) was stabbed. The student was part of Unity Hall’s Jama group and was hired for an event at the Pentecost Church in Bantama.
Sources say a wealthy associate of Agyapong gave money to the Jama group at the event. Soon after, armed men allegedly linked to the NPP stormed in and seized the money.
A confrontation broke out between the Jama group and these armed men. Gunshots were fired, leading to one member of the Jama group being stabbed.
The injured student was quickly taken to Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital for treatment. He is currently receiving medical care there.
Agyapong's team has filed a formal complaint with Kumasi Central Police Command about this incident.
On Wednesday, Agyapong spoke to the media about his withdrawal from the tour. He expressed his desire for justice for the victim.
He said, “Because of what happened yesterday, my team and I want to pull out because lives are threatened.” He added that he does not feel able to protect his team adequately.
