Kennedy Osei Nyarko Pressures Gyampo Over Delay In Shippers Act Enforcement

Kennedy Osei Nyarko, the MP for Akim Swedru, has made a call to action. He urged Professor Ransford Gyampo, CEO of the Ghana Shippers Authority, to implement the Ghana Shippers Authority Act, 2024 (Act 1122). This comes nearly a year after the law was passed.

The law was approved urgently by the Akufo-Addo administration in July 2024. Its purpose is to restore order in the shipping sector. It aims to eliminate arbitrary charges from shipping lines.

“It has been eleven months since this critical legislation was passed,” Osei Nyarko said. He emphasized that Ghanaians expect the Authority to enforce this law. The law is meant to reduce import duties and improve port operations.

He warned that further delays would harm both importers and exporters. “Do not let industry cartels pressure you into abandoning this legislation,” he cautioned.

Osei Nyarko argued that supplementary regulations are not needed for implementation. He suggested that the Ministry of Transport may need to summon Authority leaders about the delay.

“Former President Akufo-Addo and the NPP government were clear about this law's benefits,” he stated. “That’s why it was passed urgently. There’s no justification for this inaction.”
