Killing of nurse in Yamfo: IGP dispatches PIPS team as part of investigations

The Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Christian Tetteh Yohuno, has sent officers to Yamfo. They are from the Police Intelligence and Professional Standards Bureau (PIPS). Their task is to investigate the killing of a nurse in the Ahafo region.

PIPS is a professional unit within the Ghana Police Service. It investigates allegations of officer misconduct and ensures accountability.

The investigation follows the death of Richard Antwi Agyei, a 30-year-old nurse. He was allegedly assaulted by police after being arrested at an Indian hemp site. Richard later died at the Yamfo Health Centre. Another resident was injured and is hospitalized after being shot by military personnel.

This incident occurred on Friday, April 4. A group of angry youth gathered at the Yamfo Police Station. The accused officers had taken refuge there as residents tried to set it ablaze.

Last Friday, PIPS took statements from several individuals. This included Nana Gyamfi Kumanini, leader of the Yamfo Youth Association, eyewitnesses, and medical staff. They also invited suspects for their statements and met with DCOP James Annor, the Ahafo Regional Police Commander.

JoyNews reports that PIPS will engage a pathologist for a post-mortem examination. This will help determine Richard's cause of death after gathering preliminary information.

A family representative will be present during the post-mortem procedure. Once completed, the body will be released for burial and funeral rites.

The investigative team will include the post-mortem report in their evidence collection. They will then submit everything to the Attorney General's Office for assessment and advice on charges.
