Kissi Agyebeng calls for constitutional backing for OSP

The Special Prosecutor, Kissi Agyebeng, wants the Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP) included in Ghana’s constitution. He believes this will strengthen its independence and effectiveness.

Agyebeng argued that constitutional recognition would remove doubts about the OSP's legitimacy. This change would help the OSP carry out its anti-corruption work more decisively.

During a presentation to the Constitutional Review Committee on April 25, he said, “There is always a question about its constitutionality.” He emphasized that writing the OSP into the constitution would grant it full prosecutorial independence.

This change would allow the OSP to have its own powers regarding anti-corruption efforts. It would eliminate arguments against its authority and enable it to function freely.

Mr. Agyebeng criticized the current setup where some powers come from the Attorney-General’s Department. He described this arrangement as inadequate for an institution fighting corruption directly.

He insisted that only the OSP can tackle corruption independently. Constitutional backing would protect it from political interference.
