Kofi Tonto, a political aide to former Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, has responded to claims about recent tariff hikes. He argues that these increases are not due to the International Monetary Fund (IMF). Instead, he accuses the current government and the National Democratic Congress (NDC) of misleading the public.
In a Facebook statement, Mr. Tonto explained that the IMF encourages tariff reviews. However, it does not require automatic increases. “Do not let anyone lie to you,” he wrote. “IMF adjustments do not mean increments.” He emphasized that the IMF's call for review aims for realistic and sustainable tariffs.
Mr. Tonto pointed out that in early 2024, under the New Patriotic Party (NPP), tariffs were reduced for residential and non-residential users. Water tariffs remained unchanged during this period. He also referenced 2018 when electricity tariffs were cut by 17.5% under an IMF program.
“If tariffs were reduced in 2018 under an IMF arrangement, how can one claim only increases?” he asked. The facts do not support such claims, he stated. He compared NPP’s record with that of the NDC, noting a 6.47% increase by NPP in 2024 versus a sharper 14.75% hike approved by NDC.
Mr. Tonto urged Ghanaians to critically examine the facts and resist political narratives blaming international institutions. “There is science behind tariff reviews,” he said, “but we must apply a human face to decisions.” He concluded by stating that this approach is what the NPP demonstrated and should continue.
