Former Auditor-General Daniel Domelevo praised President John Mahama. He commended the president for taking action against public officials. These officials failed to declare their assets and liabilities on time.
In an interview on Joy FM's Newsnight, he called this a significant change. He described it as “a good step in the right direction.”
Domelevo noted that past administrations lacked consequences for non-compliance. They only reminded appointees to follow the rules without penalties.
He expressed happiness about the president's actions. "For the first time, asset declaration is being taken seriously," he said.
This follows President Mahama's decision regarding government appointees. They missed the March 31 deadline for asset declaration.
The president ordered these officers to forfeit three months' salary. The money will go to the Ghana Medical Trust Fund. He also warned of possible dismissals after May 6, 2025, for future violations.
While Domelevo had suggested outright dismissals, he acknowledged Mahama's approach. The president chose salary forfeiture and issued a warning about repeat offenses.
"The President made it clear that repeat offenses could lead to dismissal," he stated. "So, I say thumbs up — or kudos — to His Excellency."
When asked if losing three months' salary was enough punishment, Domelevo replied: “It is significant.” He emphasized that enforcing the law is crucial.
He urged the president to ensure compliance moving forward. Consistent enforcement will help embed accountability in Ghana’s political culture.
