The Ashanti Regional Minister, Dr. Frank Amoakohene, is halting a lorry terminal's establishment at the Blue Light Arena in Adum. This decision follows a fire that caused significant damage last week.
The Kumasi Traditional Council had ordered the demolition of walls for the terminal. However, a recent visit showed that construction was nearly complete despite this order.
Dr. Amoakohene stated, “We realized that the new station under the footbridge shouldn’t happen.” He spoke with the person overseeing the space and instructed them to stop all work.
He also informed police and NADMO to clear the area immediately.
Sheds for the terminal are already built, and tiling is finished. The terminal was expected to start operations soon.
The fire affected three buildings occupied by traders and damaged many makeshift structures. Although police have cordoned off the area, some individuals are trying to return.
Dr. Amoakohene directed police to prevent traders from returning until a report on building safety is completed.
He noted that these buildings suffered extensive damage. If people return too soon, they could collapse and create more problems.
“We conducted a structural integrity test,” he said. “I will discuss it with KMA on Thursday for their approval on key recommendations.”
Meanwhile, traders are urged to be patient as they await the Asantehene's decision regarding the land.
