The Mayor of Kumasi, Richard Ofori Agyemang Boadi, is addressing sanitation issues. He is launching a decongestion campaign on Wednesday, April 16, 2025.
In an interview with Citi FM’s Eyewitness News, he shared his views. Mayor Boadi does not want to use police for enforcement. He believes it would waste public funds and lead to no lasting change.
He noted that parts of Kumasi’s Central Business District are overcrowded. Traders are cooking and selling food in the streets. This situation is both dangerous and unattractive.
“The middle of the road has traders cooking and selling food,” he said. “It’s not attractive; I want to deal with it head-on.”
Mayor Boadi also highlighted the city's sanitation crisis. “Kumasi is engulfed with so much filth,” he stated. “I want to deal with it head-on.”
He did not confirm if President John Dramani Mahama supports the initiative. However, he urged Ghanaians to focus on the goal.
“We won’t get to that point; let’s focus on the end product.” The two-week decongestion exercise will target unauthorized vendors and pavement traders. The Mayor promises to clean up the city, with or without police support.
