Kusasis and Mamprusis are one people; It's unfortunate we are embroiled in this fatal conflict – Bawumia

Former Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia is the NPP's 2024 Presidential Candidate. He has called for a ceasefire in the Bawku conflict. This conflict involves the Kusasis and Mamprusis.

Dr. Bawumia spoke in Nalerigu on Tuesday during the NPP's Thank You Tour. He expressed sadness over the ongoing violence. He noted that both factions share many similarities.

“We are the same people with so many things in common,” he said. “Our languages are almost the same, and we have inter-married.” He urged everyone to focus on what unites them for peace.

He also condemned “deliberate lies” about him during the election campaign. Dr. Bawumia criticized attempts to politicize the Bawku conflict. He encouraged support for mediation efforts led by Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, the Asantehene.

“They spread wicked lies that I was buying weapons for the Mamprusis,” he stated. “That was a wicked and unfortunate lie.” He added that those spreading these lies have been exposed.

Dr. Bawumia emphasized that unity is essential for peace in Bawku. “The peace of Bawku should matter more than ambition,” he said. He wants an end to innocent lives being lost and hopes for successful mediation from the Asantehene’s team.
