The Minister of Government Communications, Felix Kwakye Ofosu, has expressed serious concerns over what he describes as an inadequate budgetary allocation to his ministry, warning that it could cripple key state media agencies.
Speaking in Parliament on Wednesday, March 19, he noted that the GH¢78 million assigned for the year is insufficient to support the operations of the Ghana Broadcasting Corporation (GBC), the Information Services Department (ISD), and the Ghana News Agency (GNA).
He stressed that without adequate funding, these institutions would struggle to fulfill their mandate of public information dissemination.
Mr. Kwakye Ofosu highlighted that these agencies collectively employ 2,537 civil servants whose operations depend on government resources. He further revealed that GBC alone requires GH¢36 million to expand its coverage to the six newly created regions.
He urged Parliament to reconsider the allocation, emphasizing that a well-funded media sector is crucial for effective governance and transparency.
