L.I 2462 will be revoked when Parliament reconvenes – Sammy Gyamfi

Sammy Gyamfi, the CEO of the Ghana Gold Board (GoldBod), has made an important announcement. He stated that Legislative Instrument (L.I) 2462 will be revoked when Parliament reconvenes. This law currently allows mining in forest reserves.

Gyamfi spoke on Channel One TV’s The Point of View on April 23. He emphasized President John Dramani Mahama’s strong opposition to illegal mining, known as galamsey.

The delay in revoking L.I 2462 is due to ongoing legal discussions. These discussions focus on whether to amend or repeal the law entirely. Gyamfi assured that steps for its revocation have already begun.

He mentioned that Attorney General Dr. Dominic Ayine confirmed a bill is ready. This bill awaits Parliament's return from recess for consideration.

Gyamfi stated, “L.I 2462 will be revoked by the NDC/Mahama government immediately.” He explained there were legal concerns about amending versus revoking the law. Some believed revoking it could create a vacuum in regulations.

Others argued for complete revocation, even if it led to a gap in laws. Gyamfi noted that those advocating for full revocation have prevailed. He affirmed, “The L.I 2462 is poisonous and should go entirely.”

His comments highlight the Mahama administration’s commitment to environmental protection and responsible mining practices. This signals a significant policy shift in addressing illegal mining issues.

All permanent PMMC staff remain at their posts, according to Sammy Gyamfi.
