La task force halts Trade Fair redevelopment, demands compensation

A task force claiming ties to the La Traditional Council disrupted redevelopment activities at Accra’s Trade Fair Centre on January 14, 2025.

The Nmaatii Abonasi Lands Committee Task Force drove away CK Engineering workers, citing unresolved compensation issues for the land originally granted by the Mattia Bonasset family decades ago.

Task force chairman, Makwei, declared they would maintain their presence at the site until meaningful negotiations occurred.

The Trade Fair Centre, demolished in 2020 for redevelopment into a modern commercial hub, has faced ongoing disputes.

Previous clashes included resistance from tenants and business owners, with investigative journalist Raymond Archer decrying significant losses during the demolition.

Observers call for government dialogue with the La Traditional Council to resolve the impasse and ensure project continuity.
