Dr. Abdul-Rashid Hassan Pelpuo, the Minister for Labour, Jobs and Employment, reaffirmed the government's commitment to occupational safety and health (OSH) in Ghana. This focus is especially important due to technological changes in workplaces.
At a World Safety Day event in Accra, Dr. Pelpuo highlighted that worker safety is a top priority. It is a key part of the government’s productivity and development agenda.
“Worker safety and health are non-negotiable,” he stated. He added that improving workforce welfare is crucial for the government’s goals.
Dr. Pelpuo outlined plans for more investment in health infrastructure and workplace modernization. He also mentioned integrating advanced technologies to enhance safety across industries.
These initiatives aim to create a resilient economy where safety and productivity coexist.
The event focused on “Emerging Technologies and Their Impact on Workers’ Health and Safety.” It gathered key stakeholders to discuss protecting workers amid rapid technological advancements.
Dr. Pelpuo emphasized that ongoing improvements in safety protocols are vital for worker protection and national productivity. Since taking office, he has collaborated with the Chief Inspector of Factories to strengthen Ghana’s OSH systems.
“I have formed a dedicated team to expand OSH outreach,” he said. This team aims to ensure safe working conditions for nearly every workplace.
Looking ahead, Dr. Pelpuo announced plans for innovative strategies to improve health and safety compliance nationwide.
“In the coming weeks, we will introduce bold strategies that will transform compliance,” he revealed. The goal is a national framework where technology supports economic growth while ensuring worker safety.
These strategies will include better hazard surveillance, digital labor inspection systems, smart protective equipment, and improved data collection for policy-making.
George D. Gashon, Acting Chief Inspector of Factories, also spoke at the event. He highlighted the Directorate's enhanced capacity to enforce safety regulations across industries.
