Labour Minister reaffirms commitment to job creation and HR reforms

The Minister for Labour, Jobs, and Employment, Dr. Rashid Pelpuo, reaffirmed the government's commitment to improving Human Resource policies. He aims to expand job opportunities for Ghanaians.

Dr. Pelpuo announced a new international labour migration strategy. This strategy will address unemployment and promote ethical recruitment practices.

“Human resources are the backbone of national development,” he stated. He warned that neglecting the workforce leads to stagnation and inefficiency.

He spoke during a visit from a nine-member delegation of the Chartered Institute of Human Resources Management (CIHRM). The delegation was led by President Mrs. Florence Hutchful and CEO Dr. Francis Eduku.

Their discussions focused on labour reforms, HR standards, and workforce development. Dr. Pelpuo emphasized decent work conditions and fair labour practices.

He highlighted the need for collaboration with CIHRM on professional HR standards. This collaboration aims to protect workers from exploitation.

Dr. Pelpuo called for a review of the Labour Bill to support Ghana’s economic transformation agenda. He stressed structured HR transfers and ethical labour migration policies for sustainable job creation.

Mrs. Florence Hutchful congratulated Dr. Pelpuo on his appointment. She praised his proactive approach to HR and labour issues.

She assured him that CIHRM is committed to partnering with the government on higher HR management standards. CIHRM is finalizing national HR management standards as a blueprint for best practices in employment.

Dr. Pelpuo criticized poor HR management in Ghana, citing failures in major projects due to lack of skilled personnel. “A nation cannot progress without strong human resource systems,” he said.

He noted that many projects fail shortly after being handed over due to poor management practices. “We need quality HR, not shortcuts,” he added.

He urged CIHRM to enforce strict professional HR standards based on merit, not fraudulence.

Dr. Francis Eduku revealed that CIHRM is strengthening partnerships with universities for better HR education alignment with industry needs.

Through Memorandum of Understandings (MOUs), CIHRM aims to connect academic theory with real-world applications in HR.

The CIHRM delegation included Vice-President Mrs. Dorothy Asare and other officials from their institute.
The minister's team included Mrs. Gloria Bortelei Noi and Mr. Hamidu Adakrugu among others from the Ministry of Labour, Jobs, and Employment.
