Landlord on bail over alleged ECG power theft

A landlord has been granted bail of GH¢20,000 by an Accra Circuit Court. He is accused of stealing GH¢7,067.87 worth of electricity from the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG).

The court, presided over by Mr. Bright Samuel Acquah, set the bail conditions. Eric Afriyie, the accused, must provide a surety to secure his release.

Afriyie denies the charges against him. He is accused of theft and damaging ECG’s meter. He also allegedly interfered with the supplier’s distribution system without permission.

The court has scheduled his next appearance for April 11, 2025.

The prosecution stated that Madam Regina Ayim is the complainant. She is a trader living in Alhaji Tabora.

Afriyie, 53, is her landlord. On March 3, 2025, Ayim reported that he collected money from tenants for power but used it himself.

Due to complaints about Afriyie's behavior, ECG officers inspected the meter at their house. They discovered that the meter had been tampered with.

All tenants suspected Afriyie was responsible for this illegal activity. The prosecution noted that ECG officers found he had bypassed the meter.

After discovering this issue, ECG disconnected the tenants' power supply and summoned them to address it.

When disconnected, tenants visited ECG's office to resolve their situation. They were later reconnected to power.

However, Afriyie did not respond to their invitation and remained unconnected to power. Instead, he brought someone else who illegally reconnected him without paying for electricity.

On March 19, 2025, police arrested him. During questioning, he admitted his wrongdoing and expressed regret for challenging ECG's authority.

Following investigations into his actions, he was charged with multiple offenses and brought before the court.
