Lands and Natural Resources Minister, Emmanuel Armah-Kofi Buah, has labeled illegal miners, known as galamseyers, as "dangerous terrorists" due to their devastating impact on Ghana’s environment.
Speaking at a media briefing in Accra on April 3, the Minister expressed deep concerns over the alarming pollution of water bodies caused by illegal mining.
He revealed that turbidity levels in key water sources now range between 5,000 and 12,000—far exceeding the safe limit of 500.
"We are essentially drinking poison," he warned, stressing the urgency of tackling galamsey operations. He condemned those engaged in illegal mining for prioritizing personal profit at the expense of public health and environmental sustainability.
"We can’t allow a few people to make money at our expense," he stated, urging the public to recognize galamseyers as a severe threat to national well-being.
Despite his firm stance against illegal mining, the Minister reaffirmed his support for responsible small-scale mining. He assured that the government is committed to providing legal frameworks, licenses, and resources to miners willing to operate within environmental guidelines.
His remarks come as the government intensifies efforts to combat illegal mining, which has led to widespread deforestation, water contamination, and serious health risks.
Authorities are now focused on sustainable mining practices to mitigate the environmental damage caused by galamsey operations.
