The Minister for Lands and Natural Resources, Hon. Emmanuel Armah-Kofi Buah, has promised major reforms for Bogoso-Prestea Mines. This is part of efforts to improve Ghana’s mining sector.
During his visit to the mine, the Minister spoke with workers. He listened to their concerns about safety, pay, job security, and the future of operations.
He assured them that the government is committed to addressing these issues. The government aims to support both workers and local communities. “This visit shows our commitment to a mining industry that prioritises its workers,” he said.
Bogoso-Prestea Mines was once a key national asset but now faces challenges. It has seen declining output and unstable employment in recent years. The Minister emphasized the need for bold reforms to stabilize the mine and boost productivity.
“The people of Prestea-Huni Valley deserve a mine that benefits them,” he stated. He envisions a flourishing mine that creates jobs and supports local economies.
Engagement with Traditional Leadership
The Minister also met with Nana Nteboa Pra IV, Divisional Chief of Prestea-Heman. They discussed community relations and the impact of mining on traditional lands.
Nana Nteboa Pra IV welcomed this engagement. He expressed readiness from the traditional council to support responsible mining practices.
Cooperative Mining Scheme Launched
Hon. Armah-Kofi Buah highlighted the government's Cooperative Mining Scheme (CMS). This scheme aims to empower small-scale miners through technical and financial support.
“Our Cooperative Mining Scheme is transformative,” he said. It provides access to equipment, training, and formal markets while promoting environmental responsibility.
He encouraged illegal miners to join cooperative frameworks. The Ministry will assist with licensing and capacity-building for sustainable jobs in mining.
Commitment to Sustainable, People-Centred Mining
The Minister stressed that Ghana's mining future must focus on sustainability and transparency. “Revitalising the mining sector is about people and the planet,” he noted.
He announced a task force will monitor reforms at Bogoso-Prestea. This group will ensure accountability and maintain communication with stakeholders.
This visit marks an important step in transforming Ghana’s extractive sector. With direct engagement from leaders focused on worker welfare, positive changes are expected in Prestea-Huni Valley's mining industry.
The Minister was joined by Hon. Robert Wisdom Cudjoe, MP for Prestea Huni-Valley; the Municipal Chief Executive; and Hon. Joseph Nelson, Western Regional Minister. They all reaffirmed government support for the mine and its workforce.
