Lashibi Ramsar site manager denies taking bribes after demolition exercise

The Site Manager for the Lashibi Ramsar area has denied allegations against him. Residents claim he took money to allow construction in flood-prone areas.

His response follows a demolition exercise on May 27. This operation was directed by Regional Minister Linda Ocloo. It was led by the Greater Accra Regional Security Council (REGSEC).

The initiative aims to remove unauthorized structures on waterways. It also seeks to restore natural drainage systems in sensitive areas like Tema, Klagon, and Sakumo Ramsar site.

In an interview, the site manager explained his confrontational role. He often relies on a task force from the Forestry Commission for protection.

“When I come here alone, I face hostility,” he said. “So, I move with the task force.” He recalled an incident where they manually demolished walls belonging to a woman who later accused him.

The woman pursued him in a tinted pickup truck, possibly armed. They felt safe only after leaving the area.

Responding to claims from residents about taking money, he insisted: “I have not taken a single pesewa from anyone.” He emphasized that he warns people against building on Ramsar sites.

When asked why multiple individuals accuse him, he pointed to his public role. “I’m an easy target,” he said. “They know I represent authority.”

He noted that complainants are familiar faces due to previous warnings. However, he has never accepted any money — not even as a voluntary offer.

“Not even a dime,” he stated firmly. “I would never attempt that.”

The demolition is part of efforts to address flooding in Accra. Officials aim to tackle illegal settlements obstructing water flow.

While some residents have protested, officials maintain it is necessary for safety. Linda Ocloo and REGSEC reaffirm their commitment to enforcing laws and protecting the environment. No one will be spared in this effort for public safety.
