Late PURC Chair’s family meets Mahama, burial set for December 2025

The family of the late Board Chairman of the Public Utilities Regulatory Commission (PURC), Professor Thomas Mba Akabzaa, has informed the President of his passing. They provided updates on funeral arrangements during a visit to the Presidency.

The delegation was led by former Minister for Works and Housing, Albert Abongo. It included notable figures such as William Amuna, Dr. Charles Abugre, Charles Bawa Dua, Edward Bawa, and Dr. Shafic Suleman.

Chief of Staff Julius Debrah received the delegation on behalf of the President. He praised Prof. Akabzaa as a distinguished statesman who contributed significantly to Ghana’s energy and mining sectors. He assured the family that the state would fully support honoring his legacy.

Minister for Energy John Jinapor spoke emotionally about Prof. Akabzaa’s dedication. He described him as a father figure rather than just a mentor. Jinapor recalled how the professor continued to provide guidance even in his final days.

The family announced that a pre-burial wake and mass will be held in Accra on December 10th and 11th, 2025. Afterward, they will transport his body to Dua in the Bongo District for final rites and interment.

The Akabzaa family expressed gratitude to the President and the Presidency for their support in honoring this esteemed public servant's memory.
