A petition has been sent to President John Mahama, urging him to grant a presidential pardon to William Ato Essien, founder of Capital Bank, who is serving a 15-year prison sentence for misappropriating GH¢90 million in liquidity support.
Lawyer Andrew Appiah-Danquah, who filed the petition, argues that Essien’s
conviction was unjust, citing his contributions to Ghana’s financial sector and job creation.
The document challenges claims of fraud, stating that the liquidity support was a commercial loan, not misused funds. It also highlights inconsistencies in the trial, noting that other accused persons were acquitted.
The petition urges Mahama to demonstrate his commitment to justice by granting clemency, emphasizing that Essien has already repaid part of the amount.
