Samuel Atta Akyea is the lawyer for Kwabena Adu Boahene. Adu Boahene is the former Director-General of the National Signals Bureau. Akyea revealed that a leaked memo was meant to advise the National Security Coordinator. The memo warned that the Attorney General and EOCO are on shaky ground.
Akyea stated that Adu Boahene might have to reveal national security secrets. This is to protect himself in his current situation. He said, “If push comes to shove, he has no choice.”
Speaking outside court on May 13, Akyea explained the seriousness of national security matters. He emphasized that Adu Boahene was trying to address these issues responsibly. He noted that people might question why a national intelligence officer would disclose sensitive information.
Recently, Adu Boahene's legal team provided details about the alleged ¢49 million theft. He claimed GHC5.1 million was used to buy three vehicles for President John Mahama. These included a 2024 Nissan Patrol Platinum and a 2022 Land Cruiser GXR.
Adu Boahene also alleged that GH¢960,000 was paid to members of Parliament’s Defence and Interior Committee. This payment aimed to expedite the passage of the National Signals Bureau Act (2020). Additionally, he accused an opposition party of receiving GHS 8.3 million from the stolen funds.
Adu Boahene was remanded by an Accra High Court but later granted bail. However, he was re-arrested shortly after his release for another crime related to National Security services for Ghana Water Limited.
Akyea confirmed this new arrest occurred after serving seven days with EOCO custody. The Accra High Court has ordered prosecutors to file witness statements by May 26, 2025. Justice John Eugene Nyadu Nyante expressed concerns about protecting personal rights during this trial process.
