The Minister of Education has confirmed that lecturers over 60 will not be affected by a recent government decision. This decision halts post-retirement contracts for public servants.
President John Mahama issued this directive to end contract extensions in the public service. It aims to streamline appointments and create opportunities for younger professionals.
During a press briefing on April 11, Minister Haruna Iddrisu reassured the academic community. He stated that they are exempt from this policy.
“The essence of this briefing is to assure academia,” he said. “Faculty members should know they are not affected by this directive.”
He explained that retired lecturers will still follow proper procedures for appointments. They will go through their councils and relevant institutions for approvals.
The Minister emphasized the need for clarity in higher education institutions. He noted that the academic sector is vital for national development and deserves support.
“This briefing assures lecturers and students that they are exempt from this directive,” he added.
