President John Dramani Mahama has called for more power for district education directors. He believes this will reduce teacher absenteeism. It will also stop salaries from being paid to teachers who have left their jobs.
During the National Education Forum Report presentation, he spoke at the Presidency on June 5. President Mahama said it is inappropriate for the Ghana Education Service in Accra to manage rural schools. He stressed that district directors need greater authority and autonomy.
This change would help monitor teacher attendance effectively. President Mahama also stated that teacher recruitment should not be centralized in Accra. Vacancies should be declared at the district level instead.
Local authorities know how many schools and teachers they need. He emphasized that teachers should apply directly to the districts where they want to work.
