Let’s be rational, you can’t compare a 7-month gov’t to one in office for 4 years

Former Energy Minister Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh, known as NAPO, has issued a warning. He cautioned against unfair comparisons between the current NDC administration and the previous NPP government. He urged Ghanaians to analyze these comparisons rationally.

In an interview with MyNewsGH, NAPO stated that the NDC's short time in power makes comparison difficult. The NPP governed for eight years, while the NDC has only been in office for seven months. "You can’t compare a government that has been in office for seven months to one that has been in office for four years," he said.

He referenced comments from the Governor of the Bank of Ghana to support his argument. The governor noted that past work on gold reserves influenced current economic conditions. "Things have happened in every government, and that gives you positive," NAPO remarked.

NAPO also highlighted times when the Ghana cedi performed well globally. "At a certain time, under another government, the cedi was the best currency in the world," he claimed. He dismissed doubts about this statement by mentioning available videos.

Regarding the recent appreciation of the Ghana cedi, NAPO welcomed it but expressed concern about its impact on prices. "Everybody seems to be happy about how the cedi has appreciated," he noted. However, he pointed out that this gain hasn't translated into lower prices for goods and services.

He explained further: "If goods were priced when the dollar was 15 CEDs, now they are even higher." This suggests a disconnect between macroeconomic indicators and everyday life realities in Ghana.
