Kwame Jantuah is a key member of the Convention People’s Party (CPP). He is also a legal practitioner. Recently, he commented on a viral video involving Sammy Gyamfi. Gyamfi is the Acting CEO of the Ghana Gold Board. In the video, he hands over U.S. dollar notes to Nana Agradaa, an evangelist.
Jantuah spoke on Morning Starr with Naa Dedei Tettey. He defended Gyamfi against criticism regarding the currency used. He argued that the outrage is misplaced and hypocritical. “In this country, when we read the budget, what do we read our budget in?” he asked.
He pointed out that Ghana's economy is partly dollarized. Therefore, using dollars should not be surprising. Jantuah questioned why there was so much outrage now compared to past incidents involving public officials.
He specifically mentioned Cecilia Dapaah and her controversies. “Can you compare the magnitude of Cecilia Dapaah to Sammy Gyamfi?” he asked. He noted that even if it were $1,000, it shouldn't raise as many eyebrows.
Jantuah suggested that reactions would differ if cedis were used instead of dollars. “If this money were cedis, would we hear anything? It’s because it’s in dollars,” he said.
In related news, President John Dramani Mahama has forgiven Sammy Gyamfi for this incident. The situation has sparked strong reactions within and beyond the National Democratic Congress (NDC).
