Let’s not undermine Ghana’s evolving democracy – Gloria Ofori-Boadu reacts to CJ removal petition

Lawyer and human rights advocate Gloria Ofori-Boadu urges Ghanaians to show restraint. She warns against hasty actions that could threaten democracy.

In an interview on Newsfile with JoyNews, she stressed the importance of Ghana’s democratic framework. She called for measured discourse and respect for the rule of law.

Ofori-Boadu said, “We are jumping the gun. Ghana is now a constitutional liberal democracy.” She noted that this form of democracy includes human rights protections.

She highlighted the rights to be heard and freedom, which are enshrined in the Constitution.

Meanwhile, Frank Davies, Director of Legal Affairs for the New Patriotic Party (NPP), expressed concerns about public discussions regarding Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo's potential removal.

He clarified that the issue isn't about her removal itself but how it is being discussed publicly.

Davies stated, “It’s not the removal of a Chief Justice which is the problem.” He emphasized that there should be valid reasons for such actions.

His main concern is how influential voices skew the conversation. He said, “The worry is when issues are muddied by those who should know better.”
