Justice Sophia Akuffo, a former Chief Justice, has made an important call. She urged the Government to review all contracts related to Ghana’s natural resources. This review should help the country gain more from these resources.
Akuffo believes Ghana should earn at least 60 percent from its natural resources. These resources are valued at over 10 trillion. The goal is to support economic transformation and reduce the debt burden.
She spoke at a press briefing in Accra on Monday. The theme was “Maximising the benefits from Ghana’s natural resources.”
Akuffo expressed concerns about how these resources have been exploited for years. Many contracts give exclusive rights to foreign firms. These firms take large shares of products while paying low royalties and taxes.
