Ralph Poku-Adusei, the MP for Bekwai, has made a statement. He urged the government to ensure that the recent rise of the Ghanaian cedi benefits ordinary citizens.
His comments come as public concern grows over high food prices and essential goods.
Speaking on Asase Radio in Accra, he said, “Let the cedi appreciation affect people's lives. Today, food is very expensive in Ghana.”
He added, “One meal of fufu can cost someone’s salary. The NDC should not just take credit for this; they must ensure these gains lower prices.”
Recently, the cedi has strengthened against major currencies like the US dollar. Earlier this year, it had sharply depreciated but has now recovered significantly.
This recovery is due to increased foreign exchange inflows and improved investor confidence. Tighter monetary controls by the Bank of Ghana have also played a role.
The National Democratic Congress (NDC), currently in power, claims this performance shows their fiscal policies are effective. Finance officials say the currency's rally indicates economic recovery.
However, Poku-Adusei believes true economic progress means more than just a strong currency. It should also provide everyday relief for citizens.
