Logistics, taxes, and cedi depreciation fuel cement price hikes – Manufacturers cry to Parliament

Rising transportation costs and fluctuating fuel prices are driving up cement prices in Ghana. Cement manufacturers shared these concerns during a visit by Parliament’s Works and Housing Committee.

The Committee, led by Hon. Vincent Asamoah, visited CIMAF Ghana Limited and African Cement. They heard about the pressures faced by manufacturers firsthand.

At CIMAF, management explained that logistics challenges are significant. Fuel price fluctuations and long delivery distances also contribute to rising costs. Additionally, clinker shortages and a weakening cedi have increased production expenses.

African Cement highlighted high transportation costs as another issue. They noted that reaching remote areas is particularly challenging. Rising global raw material prices and growing tax obligations also affect prices and supply.

Hon. Vincent Asamoah acknowledged these concerns during the visit. He assured companies that Parliament will work with relevant ministries to address these issues. He encouraged African Cement to expand operations to meet national demand.

“These challenges are real,” he said. “Parliament will do its part to stabilize the situation.”

For many Ghanaians, rising cement costs make construction projects more expensive. This situation puts a strain on families and businesses alike.
