Low dog vaccination rates in Upper East Region raise rabies concerns — Veterinary officer warns

Eric Agongo, the Chief Animal Health Officer in Bolgatanga, has raised concerns. He warned about low dog vaccination rates in the Upper East Region. This situation poses a public health threat due to rabies.

In an interview with A1 Radio, Mr. Agongo shared important information. The government subsidizes 50% of rabies vaccination costs in five northern regions. However, only a small number of dog owners are using this support. “In the Upper East Region, vaccination rates do not even exceed 15 percent,” he said.

This low rate is alarming for rabies transmission risks. The department aims for a 70% vaccination coverage each year. Currently, there is a shortfall of about 55%. This leaves communities at risk for outbreaks.

Mr. Agongo noted that many dog owners neglect their pets' health needs. “People do not have time for their dogs and simply do not care,” he lamented. Rabies is a deadly viral disease spread through bites or scratches from infected animals.

Without quick medical treatment, rabies is almost always fatal. Mr. Agongo urged residents to act quickly and use the subsidized vaccines. “If we want to save lives, we must vaccinate,” he emphasized.

He also mentioned plans for more public education campaigns in the region. Stronger community cooperation is needed to reach the 70% vaccination goal and prevent a health crisis.
