On Tuesday, April 8, 2025, a delegation from the Media Foundation for West Africa (MFWA) visited the National Executives of the Private Newspapers and Online News Publishers Association of Ghana (PRINPAG). They presented a strategy document aimed at promoting gender equality in Ghana's media.
The delegation was led by Mrs. Rosemond Aryeetey, Project Lead. Mr. Paul Gozo also joined her. They were welcomed by PRINPAG’s Vice President, Mr. Michael Antwi-Agyei. He was accompanied by Executive Committee members including Mr. Jeorge Wilson Kingson, Mr. Emmanuel Opare Gyan, and Ms. LangFordia Amenyah.
The MFWA's gender equality project started three years ago with Canal France International (CFI). It aims to address gender imbalances in media content and newsroom practices in Ghana and Côte d’Ivoire. The project involved engaging various stakeholders like media associations, journalists, civil society organizations, academia, and policymakers.
Mrs. Aryeetey explained that this initiative led to a "Strategy Document on Promoting Gender Equality in the Ghanaian Media." This document was launched two weeks ago and offers practical steps for media organizations to adopt gender-sensitive policies.
She mentioned that the pilot phase took place in four selected media houses and is under evaluation for possible nationwide expansion. Vice President Antwi-Agyei received the document on behalf of PRINPAG and thanked MFWA for their efforts.
He assured the delegation that PRINPAG would share the document with its members. He emphasized the importance of applying it across privately owned newspapers and online news portals in Ghana.
“Though we have few female publishers in our association, we recognize gender equality's importance,” said Mr. Antwi-Agyei. “We will ensure this document is actively used.”
Executive Secretary Mr. Wilson Kingson acknowledged women's limited participation in news publishing. He called for efforts to support more women entering media entrepreneurship.
He suggested organizing formal presentations of the document during Association gatherings to improve accessibility among members.
The meeting concluded with an agreement on ongoing collaboration between MFWA and PRINPAG for successful strategy implementation. They discussed monitoring mechanisms for evaluating gender representation in news content as well as supporting women-led media outlets.
National Organizer Mr. Opare Gyan urged support systems to empower women in news publishing, including developing female-led newspapers and online portals.
This presentation marks a significant step toward promoting gender equality in Ghana’s media industry. Both MFWA and PRINPAG are committed to turning this strategy into a practical tool for positive change.
