The Minister for Local Government, Chieftaincy, and Religious Affairs, Ahmed Ibrahim, has criticized recent protests. These protests are about the nomination of Metropolitan, Municipal, and District Chief Executives (MMDCEs).
Ibrahim pointed out that many protests stem from suspicions and assumptions. He questioned why people are demonstrating over appointments that haven't been made yet. This suggests they believe someone else is more qualified.
He spoke to journalists after meeting with leaders of major Christian institutions in Accra on April 19. This meeting was part of broader consultations with faith-based organizations. The goal is to support the National Sanitation Day (NSD) initiative.
The Minister emphasized that the President alone decides nominations. His role in this process is complete. Instead of protesting, he urged people to commend the President for his swift actions.
Ibrahim stated, "I don’t see chaos as we are saying it." He noted that agitation comes from people's suspicions rather than official announcements. For example, only the Kumasi Mayor has been mentioned in the Ashanti Region.
He asked why people in Asante Mampong are demonstrating without official news. He compared it to students worrying about failing before results are announced.
In Greater Accra, no nominations have been mentioned either. Ibrahim questioned why anyone would feel threatened by unannounced candidates.
As a minister, he said his work is done; now it's up to the President.
