Dr. Kingsley Agyemang, the MP for Abuakwa South, is very concerned about illegal mining. This activity, known as galamsey, is harming water bodies in his constituency in the Eastern Region.
In a recent media interview, Dr. Agyemang highlighted severe water shortages in many communities. Asiakwa is the most affected area. Residents there now rely heavily on sachet water for daily needs.
“The situation in Asiakwa is dire,” he said. “There is no water available, and residents depend on sachet water.” He shared that his father, a chief farmer, needs to buy sachet water weekly to mix medicine for his farm.
Dr. Agyemang noted that local rivers like Supon and Afrancho have dried up due to illegal mining. He emphasized that Asiakwa has the largest market in the municipality, making the shortage more alarming.
“Even animals can’t find water to drink,” he stated. “This isn’t a political issue; we are all to blame.” Last month, he tried to drill a mechanized borehole in the area. Children now walk long distances just to fetch water from it.
Despite these challenges, Dr. Agyemang remains committed to solving the issue in Asiakwa. “We will do our best to resolve the water crisis,” he promised. He added that everyone must understand that no one is above the law.
