MTN CEO explains reason e-levy charges will remain on transfers in short term

**MTN CEO Explains E-Levy Status After Abolishment**

MTN Ghana CEO Stephen Blewett has addressed the Electronic Transfer Levy (E-Levy). He stated that the levy will not be removed immediately.

On April 2, he explained that regulatory approval is necessary first. This follows President John Mahama’s approval of bills to scrap several taxes.

Blewett said, “There is a process that has to be followed.” He added, “I can’t abolish E-Levy until I’m told to do it.” If he acts prematurely, he risks penalties from the Bank of Ghana.

He emphasized that telecom operators must wait for official directives. Blewett noted the negative effects of the E-Levy on mobile money transactions. He believes its removal will help revitalize the sector.

“The reason for abolishing E-Levy is to encourage momentum in mobile money,” he explained. He acknowledged that removing the tax should boost digital transactions and financial inclusion.

However, MTN will only implement changes after receiving official instructions. “We will follow the process,” he assured. Once it’s gone, mobile money should regain its strength.
