Telecommunications giant MTN Group has confirmed a cybersecurity breach. This breach allowed unauthorized access to customer data in some countries.
The company has not disclosed which countries were affected. However, it assured customers that its core systems remain secure.
On April 24, 2025, MTN stated the breach was linked to an unknown third party. This party claims to have accessed parts of the company's systems.
MTN clarified that there is no evidence of compromised accounts or mobile money wallets. They emphasized that customer accounts and wallets are currently safe.
“An unknown third party has claimed to have accessed data linked to our systems,” the statement noted.
“At this stage, we do not have any information suggesting direct compromise.”
MTN assured customers that its critical infrastructure is secure and operational. This includes core networks, billing systems, and financial services platforms.
The company responded quickly by activating cybersecurity protocols. They also notified law enforcement agencies like the South African Police Service (SAPS).
Authorities in affected countries have been informed as well. MTN is cooperating with ongoing investigations into the breach.
The company has started notifying impacted customers according to local laws. They also provided general advice on safeguarding personal information during this incident.
“Customers are encouraged to remain vigilant and follow regular security measures,” MTN said. They advised placing fraud alerts on credit reports and keeping apps updated.
MTN recommended using strong passwords and being cautious of suspicious messages or links. “Do not disclose passwords, PINs, or OTPs when asked via phone or email,” they cautioned.
They also suggested activating multifactor authentication where possible.
Emphasizing transparency and customer protection, MTN stated that data privacy is a top priority.
“We will continue to manage this matter carefully,” they said. “MTN remains committed to safeguarding our systems' integrity and maintaining customer trust.”
