MTN reacts to hack claim, assures users their data is safe

MTN has confirmed that an unknown third party claims to have accessed parts of its systems. However, the company insists there is no evidence that customer accounts or mobile money (MoMo) wallets have been compromised.

In a statement on April 24, 2025, MTN said, “An unknown third party has claimed to have accessed data linked to parts of our systems. At this stage, we do not have any information to suggest that customers’ accounts and wallets have been directly compromised.”

MTN responded quickly by activating its cybersecurity protocols. They also alerted law enforcement agencies like the South African Police Service (SAPS) and the Hawks. Authorities in affected regions are currently investigating the matter.

The company assured the public that its critical infrastructure remains secure. This includes core networks, billing systems, and financial services platforms.

MTN has begun notifying impacted customers as required by local laws. They are also providing guidance on personal data protection.

“Customers are encouraged to remain vigilant and follow regular security measures,” MTN advised. They recommend using strong passwords and keeping apps and devices updated. Customers should be cautious when responding to suspicious messages or links.

MTN urged customers not to share sensitive information such as passwords or PINs via phone, text, or email. They also recommended activating multifactor authentication whenever possible.

While acknowledging the seriousness of the situation, MTN emphasized that protecting customer data is a top priority.

“We will continue to contain and manage this matter carefully,” they stated. “MTN remains committed to safeguarding our systems' integrity and maintaining customer trust.”
