Madina Fire: GNFS calls for boreholes to boost firefighting

The Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) has stressed the need for alternative water sources. They warn that relying solely on hydrants may not be enough during emergencies.

A fire hydrant is a street pipe that provides water for firefighting. Greater Accra Regional Commander ACFO II Rashid Nisawu spoke about this issue in an interview on Channel One Newsroom on April 19. He advised communities to prioritize sinking boreholes and collecting water for firefighting.

Nisawu cautioned that hydrants might run dry when they are most needed. He said, “We should try and sink boreholes and collect water for firefighting.” His comments followed the Madina Redco fire incident, which claimed one life and destroyed over 100 structures.

Concerns about Ghana’s firefighting infrastructure continue, especially in densely populated areas. Access to water sources can be challenging in these regions. The GNFS advocates for improved preparedness and proactive measures against fire outbreaks.

Authorities and stakeholders are expected to discuss sustainable solutions. Their goal is to ensure adequate water supplies remain accessible for firefighting operations.
