Madina Redco flats area gutted by fire, Nigerian woman reported dead

Madina Redco Fire: Over 150 Structures Destroyed, One Woman Dead

On April 18, a fire devastated the Madina Redco flats area. The blaze destroyed over 150 structures, including 140 wooden buildings and 20 metal containers. Tragically, a Nigerian woman lost her life after being trapped in the fire.

The fire started at 11:15 p.m. Firefighters from Madina Fire Station arrived within two minutes of the call. They received backup from Adenta, Legon, Abelemkpe, and Headquarters teams.

Despite their quick response, the fire was already advanced. The firefighters managed to control it by 12:02 a.m. They fully extinguished the flames by 2:22 a.m.

In another incident on April 15, a fire hit Tse Addo in La Dade-Kotopon Municipality. This fire destroyed properties worth millions of Ghana cedis during the night. Residents were left devastated as they watched their homes burn.

Fire officers responded but could not save many properties. Women were seen crying over their losses, which took years to acquire.

Earlier this year, a first-year student at Saboba EP Senior High School died in a dormitory fire. She was unable to escape because the door was locked.

In March, another student died after a gas explosion in Koforidua Technical University. A young boy and a woman were injured and are receiving treatment at Eastern Regional Hospital.

In response to these incidents, Interior Minister Muntaka Mubarak proposed a new fuel tax. He suggested adding up to 10 pesewas per liter to support the fire service's work. This proposal follows documented struggles faced by firefighters during recent emergencies.
