Mahama ‘third term’ agenda through Supreme Court nominations

Alexander Afenyo-Markin, the Minority Leader and MP for Effutu, has made serious allegations. He claims that President John Mahama and the National Democratic Congress (NDC) have a hidden agenda. This agenda aims to return to power beyond the constitutional limit.

His comments follow Mahama's nomination of seven Justices of the Court of Appeal to the Supreme Court on April 30. This action aligns with Article 144(2) of the 1992 Constitution. The nominations require parliamentary approval.

In an interview on May 1, Afenyo-Markin expressed his concerns. He believes that nominating these justices is part of a strategy to gain influence over the judiciary. He suggests this move could pave the way for a third-term agenda.

Afenyo-Markin stated, “It is obvious that the bold attempts by the president...is a first major attempt they have rehearsed.” He accused what he calls "hawks" within the NDC of orchestrating this plan behind the scenes.

He added, “All that the NDC is doing is through advice from these hawks.” They are allegedly setting up a third-term agenda for their leadership.
