Richard Ahiagbah, the Director of Communications for the New Patriotic Party (NPP), has criticized President John Dramani Mahama. He claims the President's actions threaten Ghana’s democratic foundations. This relates to ongoing efforts to remove Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo from office.
Ahiagbah spoke on The Big Issue on Channel One TV on April 19. He questioned the intent behind the President’s decision. He believes it undermines democratic governance in Ghana.
He stated, “This president is targeting our democracy.” He added that trying to remove the Chief Justice is unjustifiable. “It makes no democratic sense,” he said.
Ahiagbah also noted that this administration has performed poorly regarding democracy. He emphasized that their rise to power was based on democratic principles.
His comments come as attention grows around the petition process involving Chief Justice Torkornoo. President Mahama formally referred a petition for her removal to the Council of State. This action prompted a swift response from Torkornoo, who requested access to the petitions against her.
In response, President Mahama allowed her ten days to submit a defense. Reliable sources confirm that she submitted her response before the April 7, 2025 deadline. She sent it to both the President and the Council of State.
Now that her response is submitted, the Council of State will review it. They will determine if there is enough merit for further proceedings regarding the petition.
