Mahama: Ghana card to be linked to vehicles for automated toll collection

President John Dramani Mahama has confirmed plans to replace traditional tollbooths. This change will introduce a fully automated road toll collection system. The plan is part of the 2025 Economic Policy and Budget Statement.

President Mahama explained that the new system will be digital. Each vehicle will link to its owner’s Ghana Card. Toll charges will then bill directly to the owner's mobile money or bank account.

He stated, “We said in the budget that we were going to reintroduce road tolls.” Ongoing discussions are focused on finalizing this collection method. The President emphasized that the new system is simple and efficient.

“We will just go straight digital,” he said. For example, if a toll costs GHS 1, it will be easy to pay. A picture of your car will be taken, and you’ll receive a bill via MoMo or bank account.

This transition aims to improve revenue collection. It also seeks to reduce inefficiencies from manual toll systems.
