President John Dramani Mahama launched a new program in Techiman on Saturday. He stated that Ghana is preparing to meet the rising demand for palm oil. Currently, the country produces 300,000 metric tons of palm oil. However, national demand is about 450,000 metric tons.
This creates a shortfall of around 150,000 metric tons. To address this gap, strategic planning and increased productivity are essential. The global palm oil market is projected to reach $65 billion by 2027.
The President introduced the Feed Ghana Programme during the launch. This initiative aims to boost food production across the country. It will promote modern farming techniques and improve infrastructure. Additionally, it will establish agro-industrial zones throughout Ghana.
President Mahama also announced a new policy for the palm oil industry. This policy will provide incentives along the entire value chain, from cultivation to export. The Tree Crop Development Authority will focus on six key economic trees: oil palm, cashew, mango, coconut, shea, and rubber.
The emphasis will be on developing the oil palm sector. President Mahama envisions modernizing agriculture to create jobs and reduce food inflation. He aims to enhance food security through these efforts. The Feed Ghana Programme serves as a comprehensive framework for all agricultural initiatives in the country.
