President John Mahama announced plans to ban styrofoam in Ghana. This ban will include both manufacturing and importing the material. He made this announcement on Thursday, June 5. It was during the launch of the 2025 National Tree Planting Exercise.
Mahama described styrofoam as a major polluter. He noted it is often discarded on streets after use. The material is commonly used for packaging popular foods like porridge, banku, and waakye.
To address this issue, he stated, “we are going to ban the importation of styrofoam plastics.” He also suggested promoting paper and aluminum foil as healthier alternatives.
The 2025 National Tree Planting Exercise started today and will run until June 30.
