Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin has criticized President John Dramani Mahama. He accused Mahama and the National Democratic Congress (NDC) of disrespecting Ghana’s 1992 Constitution.
Afenyo-Markin made these comments on Monday, May 5. This was during a New Patriotic Party (NPP) demonstration against Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo's suspension. The demonstration ended with a petition submitted to Parliament.
Speaking to demonstrators and the media, Afenyo-Markin said the current administration disregards constitutional principles. He stated, “President Mahama and his party have no respect for the 1992 Constitution.”
He warned that suspending the Chief Justice threatens judicial independence and constitutional governance. “This is not just an attack on one person,” he said. “It is an assault on our republic's foundation.”
The demonstration included NPP supporters, civil society actors, and concerned citizens. They demanded transparency and adherence to the Constitution from the executive branch.
The petition calls for an investigation into the Chief Justice’s suspension. It also urges a restoration of constitutional order.
In response, the government claims that the President followed proper procedures based on received petitions.
