Mahama announces first public university for Ahafo Region

President John Dramani Mahama has announced plans for a new public university in the Ahafo Region. This initiative aims to enhance tertiary education and job training in agriculture, natural resources, and health sciences.

During his “Thank You” tour on Saturday, May 31, Mahama spoke in Goaso. He emphasized that the university will align education with the region’s economic strengths. It will also improve access for students in underserved areas.

“This university will offer quality education,” Mahama told an excited crowd. He added that it is part of a broader goal to expand access to tertiary education. The aim is to build capacity in regions that need it most.

The proposed university is central to the National Democratic Congress (NDC) government’s education policy. This policy focuses on decentralizing academic opportunities and preparing graduates for local industries.

Mahama also announced plans to upgrade nursing and midwifery training institutions into degree-awarding colleges. He pledged continued distribution of buses to senior high schools and health training institutions across the country.

Currently, Ahafo students pursuing higher education in science and health must travel long distances. The president noted that the new university would ease this burden. It will create a direct pathway for local youth into professional careers.
