President John Mahama has announced plans to ease congestion in Accra. He aims to develop a new city as an administrative and commercial hub.
On May 28, 2024, he shared these plans with the European Union Ambassador. This meeting was part of the lead-up to the 2024 election.
Mahama believes this initiative will speed up government services. It will also help address severe congestion in the capital.
During a Thank You tour in Dodowa, he outlined his vision. Selected government ministries and agencies will relocate to the new city. The city will have modern infrastructure, including an expressway and railway line connecting it to Accra.
“Accra is overstretched,” Mr. Mahama stated. He noted that rapid urbanization causes traffic congestion and inadequate infrastructure. “It is time we think long-term,” he added.
He emphasized that this initiative will stimulate economic activity. It will also create new areas for investment and housing.
