President John Dramani Mahama has signed eight amended bills into law. This includes the repeal of the Betting Tax, Emissions Tax, and Electronic Transfer Levy (E-Levy).
This decision is significant for the country's economic policy. It fulfills promises made by the administration to reduce financial burdens on citizens and businesses.
The Betting Tax imposed a 10% levy on gambling winnings. Many criticized it for discouraging participation in the betting industry.
The Emissions Tax aimed to be an environmental initiative but faced backlash. Vehicle owners and businesses found it financially burdensome.
The E-Levy was a 1% tax on electronic transactions. It sparked nationwide protests since its introduction, with many calling it double taxation.
Finance Minister Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson announced plans to eliminate these taxes in this year’s budget. Ahead of the 2024 general election, President Mahama promised to remove them.
The other bills include:
- Public Procurement Act
- Value Added Tax Amendment Bill, 2025
- Petroleum Revenue Management Amendment Bill, 2025
- Income Tax (Amendment) Bill, 2025
- Earmarked Funds Capping and Realignment (Amendment) Bill, 2025
- Gold Board Bill, 2025
