President John Dramani Mahama has responded to journalist Manasseh Azure Awuni. He said that Manasseh's petition about the Youth Employment Agency (YEA)-Zoomlion contract is “being given the necessary attention.”
This response came in a formal letter. Manasseh submitted his petition two weeks ago.
In his petition, Manasseh called for ending the 19-year contract with Zoomlion Ghana Limited. This contract has faced controversy over corruption and lack of value for money.
Under the old contract, which expires in September 2024, GHS 850 was allocated to each sweeper. Zoomlion kept GHS 600 and paid sweepers only GHS 250 monthly.
Moreover, Zoomlion charged significant interest due to delays in YEA's payments. This amounted to GHS 90 million in 2024. The company did not need proof of borrowing money for prefinancing, raising fairness concerns.
Zoomlion recently proposed a new allocation under a revised contract. This proposal is currently being discussed at YEA. Under it, each sweeper would receive GHS 1,308, with Zoomlion taking GHS 888 and giving sweepers GHS 420 monthly.
Manasseh’s petition highlighted financial discrepancies and corruption risks linked to the contract. He urged that it be discontinued.
Dr. Callistus Mahama, Secretary to the President, acknowledged receipt of the petition. He assured that the matter is under thorough review and will be communicated soon.
