President John Dramani Mahama has announced a new initiative. He will offer 1,000 scholarships to tertiary students in the ECOWAS region. These scholarships will allow them to study in Ghana.
The announcement took place during the ECOWAS 50th Anniversary launch. This event was held in Accra on Tuesday, April 4. President Mahama spoke to dignitaries and stakeholders about regional unity.
He urged West African leaders to rethink their future together. “Let us position our sub-region as a diplomatic anchor,” he said. He emphasized the importance of integration, dialogue, and peaceful coexistence.
The scholarship initiative is more than just a gesture. “This is an act of solidarity,” he stated. It aims to help young people see each other as partners, not foreigners.
The president's announcement received applause from the audience. Many believe education and youth engagement are crucial for regional cooperation.
